Taggart says as a way of his past introduction, “Hey, I was doing just fine before I met youįollowing up with his current mindset, “Hey, you tell your friends it was nice to meet themĪnd Halsey, well, the lyrics speak for themselves, “You look as good as the day I met youĬoming back with the present thought, “Stay and play that Blink-182 song Which brings me to my point that “Closer” is a song about pausing the moment - hanging on and deflecting all other points of time. Even more so, because these two knew the score: it didn’t/won’t work out, but let’s enjoy what is great between us in this moment. So when this couple meets each other again after four years of mobile silence in a digital world, it felt easy to give in to momentary happiness in what was right years ago. No matter how much you want to cling to the happy times and bask in what you thought were the glory days, sometimes it’s just time to move on and find somewhere, with something, and/or someone that makes more sense. In my life, moving away after college was/is rough. “Closer” is about coming to terms with the end - not just of the relationship, but of what you were. This couple had a great bud of romance that just didn’t click past nostalgic musical memories of Blink or carnal meetings. The Chainsmokers’ Andrew Taggart’s and Halsey’s one liner statements beginning with the simple “hey” makes this song feel more conversational - whiiiich is uber ironic, because I didn’t really get the impression these two lovers spent much time conversing in any form of motor vehicle or on any mattress (stolen or otherwise). ![]() Perfectly inept at conversing naturally (whatever the hell that means) and easily, I get flushed and embarass myself, rolling out my most blunt and unfiltered comments for the opposite sex… it’s a gift. No we ain't ever getting older.Much like in real life, I worked myself up just for a “hey” from someone in The Chainsmokers, “Closer”. The writers mentioned listening to 'i miss you' by blink while writing this song, and it inspired them to write more lyrics. She feels nostalgic and misses what they had, making her forget why she left him to begin with. Stay, and play that Blink-182 song that we beat to death in Tucson, ok.ĪNALYSIS: nothing has changed. I forget just why I left you, I was insane. They're repeating the same events almost as if they never grew up. He wants to bit her shoulder as a sign of longing, he hasn't seen her in a while and he wants her closer to him. We ain't ever getting older.ĪNALYSIS: She buys things that cost more than she can afford to fit into the spoiled rich girl community in college. Pull the sheets right off the corner of the mattress that you stole from your roommate back in Boulder. ![]() So baby pull me closer in the back seat of your Rover that I know you can't afford, bite that tattoo on your shoulder. Four years of no contact later, he finds her at a hotel bar looking pretty. No I can't stopĪNALYSIS: One of them broke up with the other and moved out of town. Moved to the city in a broke down car, and four years, no calls, now you're looking pretty in a hotel bar, and I can't stop. He questions her choice in friends, or he was hoping they wouldn't have to spend time with anyone, just so he could be alone with her. Hey, tell your friends it was nice to meet them, but I hope I never see them againĪNALYSIS: He met her friends and has a few doubts about them. He drinks too much, and he considers it an issue, that might cause trouble to his significant other, but he's okay and he believes they can dodge past that obstacle. He didn't deal with the heartbreak and he was alright. I drink too much and that's an issue, but I'm okayĪNALYSIS: Before meeting one another, he was okay and had no edge in his life, nor did he have the excitement that came along with his significant other.
